Secure Private Access (SPA) Is Now Included in Citrix UHMC — Why That Matters

Written by Chris Downes | Apr 2, 2026 4:28:24 AM

Citrix’s recent update to Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud (UHMC) is an important one: Secure Private Access (SPA) is now included within the UHMC licence.

This gives customers more value from their existing Citrix investment and opens up broader zero trust access and VPN replacement opportunities without adding another separate product.

This matters because many organisations are still managing multiple tools for remote access, private app access, virtual desktops and security controls. Including SPA within UHMC helps simplify that. Customers can move towards a more consolidated Citrix platform for secure access and workspace delivery, with less vendor sprawl and less licensing complexity.

Why SPA matters

SPA is Citrix’s zero trust network access solution. Instead of giving users broad network-level access like a traditional VPN, it provides application-level access based on identity, device and policy. That means stronger security, reduced attack surface and a better fit for modern hybrid work.

Key scenarios

The most obvious scenario is VPN replacement. SPA helps organisations modernise remote access by replacing broad network connectivity with secure, app-level access.

It is also ideal for:

  • Secure access to private apps across hybrid environments
  • Contractor and third-party access without exposing the wider network
  • BYOD and unmanaged device access with tighter policy control
  • Simplifying secure access for web, SaaS and internal applications

Why this is a big deal for UHMC customers

For UHMC customers, this creates a strong opportunity to consolidate. Rather than buying and managing separate access tools, organisations can use capabilities already included in their Citrix licensing to support secure access projects.

That means:

  • Single-vendor simplicity
  • Licence and cost consolidation
  • Fewer overlapping products
  • A clearer path to zero trust access

What this enables in real environments

With SPA included in UHMC, organisations can take a practical step towards zero trust by shifting from network-wide connectivity to policy-driven, application-level access. This is especially valuable in hybrid environments where teams need consistent controls across on-premises and cloud services, while still reducing reliance on traditional VPNs over time.

  • Extend ZTNA-style access to private apps (app-level access instead of broad network-level exposure)
  • Support contractors and partners with more granular and controlled access patterns
  • Apply a consistent approach across hybrid deployments, including on-premises data paths and cloud-hosted services
  • Reduce VPN dependence over time while maintaining continuity for legacy requirements

For customers already using Citrix for app and desktop delivery, adding SPA into the mix makes the overall platform even stronger.

Now is a great time to review whether your current VPN and remote access approach is adding unnecessary cost and complexity.
