# What Happens When Ransomware Takes Your Windows Fleet Offline?

If ransomware reached your Windows fleet tomorrow, how long until your team were working again?

That question has moved from the IT risk register to the board agenda in the space of a few years. It is harder than it looks, because while most organisations have a plan, they have not quantified or set-up measurements to determine what a successful outcome looks like.

## Nobody Recovers Their Own Machine

Reimaging workflows, hardware swap pools and central recovery services have one thing in common. None of them can be started by the person who is locked out of their computer. Each need someone else to act first: a technician to rebuild the machine, a depot to issue a replacement, a supplier to ship stock. And each one scales with the size of the fleet.

Two hundred devices is a long week for most teams. Two thousand is a different magnitude of problem and resolution is dependent on spare hardware that is rarely sitting on a shelf when the incident happens. And the larger the fleet, the longer the average user waits.

It isn't only ransomware. A bad update can take a Windows fleet offline in an afternoon without anyone attacking anything.

## A Second Operating System on the Same Disk

Citrix UniconOS dual boot, released in August 2026, takes a different approach. A second, hardened instance of Citrix UniconOS sits alongside Windows on the same physical disk, in its own isolated partition. Windows itself is untouched: no reimage, no bootloader surgery, no second device to ship.

When a user reboots, they see a boot menu. If Windows is unavailable, they choose Citrix UniconOS, sign in, and reach their applications through Citrix DaaS and Citrix SecurAccess with Chrome Enterprise within minutes.

The practical effect is that recovery time stops scaling with fleet size. It scales with a single reboot per person. There is no separate disaster recovery hardware pool to fund and maintain, and no site-by-site rollout to run in parallel with the incident you are already managing.

## Why Provenance Matters as Much as Speed

Speed is the obvious benefit. The less obvious one is that the recovery path can be trusted.

The recovery operating system is immutable, isolated and signed from shim to kernel, with Secure Boot enabled end to end and TPM compatibility throughout. It does not depend on the Windows filesystem, so a compromised Windows instance cannot poison it. This means that the recovery path can be demonstrated rather than asserted: documented, testable, and still standing after the attack it exists to mitigate.

There's a second benefit that tends to surface only during an incident. The pressure to restore service often destroys the evidence that forensic analysis, regulatory reporting or cyber-insurers later need. Keeping the compromised Windows installation frozen while people work from the isolated instance removes that trade-off.

## Keeping Business Moving During an Incident

No organisation can eliminate risk entirely. The real measure of resilience is how quickly the business can continue operating when disruption occurs.

Citrix UniconOS Dual Boot provides a trusted recovery path that allows users to regain secure access to applications within minutes, reducing downtime and minimising operational impact. While security controls focus on preventing and detecting threats, dual boot focuses on ensuring people stay productive when incidents occur.

Together, they create a stronger and more resilient operating model.

## The Australian and New Zealand Reality

Cyber resilience is now a board-level priority. In 2025, Australian organisations reported 1,205 data breaches, the highest annual figure since mandatory reporting began. Health service providers remained the most affected sector, accounting for 225 reported breaches.

These numbers reinforce an important truth: the question is no longer whether an incident will occur, but how quickly an organisation can recover when it does.

## Three Questions Every IT Leader Should Ask

1. How quickly can our people get back to work after a major endpoint incident?
2. Does our recovery plan scale if the number of affected devices doubles?
3. Have we tested and proven our recovery process within the last 12 months?

If the answers are uncertain, that's a resilience gap worth addressing.
